Both corridors are built and running, well after the term in which the promise was made. The Ministry of Railways told Parliament on 5 August 2026 that the Eastern corridor from Ludhiana to Sonnagar, 1,337 km, and the Western corridor from Dadri to Jawaharlal Nehru Port, 1,506 km, at a total cost of ₹1,24,005 crore, 'have been completed and commissioned'. The comparison the ministry itself draws is the strongest evidence for the promise: route kilometres completed up to 2014, nil; 2014 to March 2026, 2,843. About 443 trains run on the corridors a day, and 1,47,993 freight trains used the network in 2025-26. The promise said 'expedited', not a date, so the delay past 2019 does not break it — but a project sanctioned in 2006 took two decades.
“Work on the Freight Corridors and attendant Industrial Corridors will be expedited. This will result in the faster movement of people and goods.”No CAG performance audit published
No CAG performance audit covering this scheme has been published. The absence of an audit is not evidence that the claim is either accurate or inaccurate.
No CAG audit of the dedicated freight corridors covering their completion has been tabled in a report we hold. The figures here are the Ministry of Railways' own.
No audit period to plot — no CAG performance audit covering this scheme has been published.
2,843 route km of dedicated freight corridor completed between 2014 and March 2026, against nil up to 2014
The Eastern corridor as built runs to Sonnagar; the Sonnagar-Dankuni section was to be taken up separately and is not part of the commissioned 1,337 km. Further corridors remain at the proposal stage.
Lok Sabha Unstarred Question No. 2903, Development of Dedicated Freight Corridor Projects — answer by the Ministry of Railways
The 2014 promise on freight corridors is a verb, not a target: "Work on the Freight Corridors and attendant Industrial Corridors will be expedited."
That makes it a promise about pace, and the Ministry of Railways' answer of 5 August 2026 supplies the comparison in the form the promise invites. Route kilometres of dedicated freight corridor completed "upto 2014": Nil. Completed "2014 to 2026 (Till March 2026)": 2,843.
The two corridors themselves: "Eastern Dedicated Freight Corridor (EDFC) from Ludhiana to Sonnagar (1337 Km) and Western Dedicated Freight Corridor (WDFC) from Dadri to Jawaharlal Nehru Port Terminal (JNPT) (1506 Km) at a total cost of ₹1,24,005 Cr. Both the DFCs… have been completed and commissioned."
They are carrying traffic, not sitting idle: "On average, about 443 trains are operated per day on DFCs. During FY 2025-26, total 1,47,993 freight trains were operated on DFC network." Freight moved off the mixed passenger-and-goods trunk routes is the whole point of building them, and that has happened.
Three qualifications, none of which overturns the finding.
The timeline. The corridors were sanctioned in 2006 and the first sections opened only from 2020; full commissioning came around two decades after approval and well after the 2014-19 term. The manifesto did not name a date, so the promise is not broken by lateness — but "expedited" is doing a lot of work for a project that took twenty years.
The scope. The Eastern corridor as commissioned ends at Sonnagar; the onward Sonnagar-Dankuni stretch was separated out and is not in the 1,337 km. Additional corridors — East Coast, East-West, North-South — remain proposals.
And the industrial corridors named alongside them in the same sentence are a separate programme with its own, slower record, which this answer does not cover and we do not assess here.
Measured against what was promised — expedite work on the freight corridors — the record shows nil before and 2,843 route kilometres after, both corridors commissioned and heavily used. Our verdict is accurate, with delivery recorded as partly delivered because it fell outside the term.

Lok Sabha Unstarred Question No. 2903, Development of Dedicated Freight Corridor Projects — answer by the Ministry of Railways
“Ministry of Railways had taken up construction of two Dedicated Freight Corridors (DFC) viz. Eastern Dedicated Freight Corridor (EDFC) from Ludhiana to Sonnagar (1337 Km) and Western Dedicated Freight Corridor (WDFC) from Dadri to Jawaharlal Nehru Port Terminal (JNPT) (1506 Km) at a total cost of ₹1,24,005 Cr. Both the DFCs i.e. Eastern DFC (1337 Km) and Western DFC (1506 Km) have been completed and commissioned. The comparative statement showing completion of DFCs is as under: upto 2014 — Nil; 2014 to 2026 (Till March 2026) — 2843 route kms. On average, about 443 trains are operated per day on DFCs. During FY 2025-26, total 1,47,993 freight trains were operated on DFC network.”
