The bid was made, on time, and the decision is not India's to take. The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports told Parliament on 27 July 2026 that 'The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) issued a Letter of Intent (LOI) on 01.10.2024 to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to host the Olympic Games in India in 2036' — five and a half months after the manifesto — and that India 'is presently in the Continuous Dialogue stage under which a feasibility assessment is conducted by IOC'. The promise was to facilitate a bid, not to win one, and the host election is expected only at the IOC Session in mid-2029. The infrastructure half of the promise is not addressed in this answer.
“Facilitating Hosting Olympics — We will facilitate IOA to bid for hosting the Olympic Games in 2036, and develop sports infrastructure like stadiums.”No CAG performance audit published
No CAG performance audit covering this scheme has been published. The absence of an audit is not evidence that the claim is either accurate or inaccurate.
No CAG audit relating to the Olympic bid has been tabled. The status here is the ministry's own account to Parliament.
No audit period to plot — no CAG performance audit covering this scheme has been published.
Letter of Intent issued 1 October 2024; India in the IOC's Continuous Dialogue stage; host election expected mid-2029
The answer reports no bid budget, no candidate city commitment and no stadium programme. On athletes, it says preparation for Los Angeles 2028 runs through the Mission Olympic Cell under the Target Olympic Podium Scheme, and that no assessment of how many Indians will qualify can be made yet.
Lok Sabha Starred Question No. 107, Bid for Hosting the 2036 Olympic Games — answer by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports
The 2024 promise is carefully worded, and the wording is what makes it keepable: "We will facilitate IOA to bid for hosting the Olympic Games in 2036, and develop sports infrastructure like stadiums."
Not "we will host the Olympics". Not "we will win the bid". Facilitate a bid — which is a process the government controls, unlike the outcome.
That process happened. The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports told the Lok Sabha on 27 July 2026: "The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) issued a Letter of Intent (LOI) on 01.10.2024 to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to host the Olympic Games in India in 2036. India is presently in the Continuous Dialogue stage under which a feasibility assessment is conducted by IOC."
Five and a half months from manifesto to letter of intent, and India is in the formal process the IOC runs for prospective hosts. On the promise as written, delivered.
Three things this fact-check cannot yet tell a reader, and one it can.
The outcome is years away and not India's decision: "The election of the host is expected to be undertaken by the IOC Session in mid-2029." Any assessment of whether India hosts the 2036 Games belongs to a future review, not this one.
The cost is not disclosed. The answer contains no bid budget, no figure for what the Continuous Dialogue stage requires India to spend, and no commitment to a candidate city — Ahmedabad has been widely reported as the intended host, and the answer does not name it.
The stadium half of the promise is unaddressed. "Develop sports infrastructure like stadiums" appears nowhere in this reply, and no figure for sports infrastructure built or sanctioned is given.
What the answer does establish about athletes is worth recording, because it is the part that affects results rather than prestige: preparation for Los Angeles 2028 runs through "the Mission Olympic Cell (MOC) under the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS)", providing training, international exposure, coaching, sports science and equipment. And the ministry is honest about what it does not know: "No definitive assessment with regard to Indian athletes qualifying for Los Angeles Olympics 2028 can be made at this stage."
Our verdict is accurate.
